Quiet Days And Solitude

After the frivolities for Nat’s birthday, we both settled in for a quiet Sunday with Nat doing his crossword while I did laundry and watched one of my few favourite shows “Sunday Morning“. With snow and slush all around our little village it wasn’t very inviting to venture out and with that we stayed put and enjoyed the peace, quiet and tranquility. December was a busy month and a quiet day was earned.

We got brave and after my hair appointment on Tuesday we ventured into St. Catharines. Nat wanted to exchange a Christmas gift at Golf Town while I wandered around Michael’s. Never one to leave that store empty-handed, I managed to find a couple of items that would hopefully fulfill my plans for a new decorative piece for the fireplace mantel. We then headed over to Best Buy to look around for a possible new TV for the bedroom. The old analog TV is looking big and cumbersome (despite it’s small size) compared to the new LCDs. We both felt it was time to upgrade now that the satellite receiver is no longer occupying space on the dresser. LCD prices have fallen substantially and a new one could be hung on the bedroom wall quite nicely. Naturally, it didn’t take us long to find a good one and we’ll cough up the extra money for the model with bonus DVD player. We’ve been finding the new Cable HD/DVR Receiver so great and easy to use that we can even store our old VCR/DVD player downstairs. Don’t want to quite get rid of it, as I’ve still got a couple old VHS movies that can’t be converted and I’ve not yet replaced on DVD. So “just in case”, ’cause you never know!!! Once we found the one we wanted Nat announced it would be my birthday gift. God, and I only got him Ice Dog hockey tickets! Thanks, Babe – love ya and will try and bake you something special!!

Later that afternoon we decided to muck about with the new doodads on the HD/DVR Receiver. Discovered some great features – like 2 tuners where you can literally switch from one tuner to the other and literally watch 4 different shows. Our first intentions were to find out how to use the ‘picture-in-picture’ feature (for the 2 hockey games on that night) and ended up finding all kinds of bells and whistles we never had with satellite. Had great fun and, of course, will probably never remember to use half of them!!

Wednesday morning we decided to stay in, again. Nat wanted to get going on finishing the laundry area. The trim and doors had to be sanded and repaired before painting and he knew it was going to be fiddly. I decided to make that new mantle piece floral arrangement with what I found at Michael’s and then re-organize the kitchen pantry in the afternoon. We were both successful in our chores and settled back mid-afternoon to enjoy the rest of the day. We’re thinking we’ll pick up the pace a bit and head up to Lowe’s (for a new laundry countertop) and over to Limeridge Mall (new bathroom towels) for a day out. So far this new year is looking pretty good . A little here, a little there and pretty soon it’ll get done!!

Born and raised in a small town in Ontario, Canada, with 5 sisters and a brother. Now retired, my husband and I travel, play golf and am slowly renovating our new (old) home. After my kidney transplant in 1999, we've learned to enjoy life to the fullest. Nat and I have driven across Canada, taken an Alaskan cruise and drove home via the Northern United States. We've also been to Mexico, the Caribbean, the East Coast of Canada and Cape Breton. We've done the "Snowbird" thing, having lived in Destin, Florida for a couple of months of the year. In 2007 we changed our travel plans in order to move into and renovate our new "old" home, but hope to someday get back on the road again. We also love returning to Scotland (Nat's origin of birth) to visit his family and tour the Highlands and surrounding Isles.
