MY DAYS IN RETIREMENT

Ubuntu To You Too!!

The past two days have been unbearably boring. So today I decided to install Ubuntu on the laptop, as we’re not using it anymore and I thought this would be the perfect chance to try this Linux-based operating system out. I had no idea that it would take as long as it does to be installed. Either that or I’ve done something drastically wrong and have now officially screwed up the laptop. So far it’s just been sitting there installing, installing, installing and installing for what seems to be hours. Every now and again a little circle starts to go around and around but then it disappears and there things sit!! I guess I’m going to have to wait to see what happens or else shut the thing down and try again later??

I must admit I’ve been having problems with the laptop. Windows XP hasn’t been running that smoothly (and thank God we’ve switched to a MAC) and the wireless mouse doesn’t even work anymore. I suppose the thing is now really old – we’ve had it more than 5 years – and I would dearly love to replace it, but it’s not a necessity right now, so we’ll have to put things on hold. Besides, I’m saving for that ever lovin’, gotta have, really need MAC Book – at least until Apple comes out with something newer and pizzazzier!! The laptop is starting to struggle, so I think I’m going to have to do that dastardly deed and shut ‘er down. I’ll give it another try on the weekend.

Nat’s making pretty good headway in the garage. He’s now got some of his doodads, thing-a-ma-jigs, nuts, bolts and small tools organized and hung up on his pegboard. He still has a ways to go, but at least now he’s starting to see results. He’s had a long tiring day of standing on the concrete floor and I can imagine he’ll be asleep in his big ‘ole easy chair by 8:00 pm.

Thursday night we headed over to Fonthill for another baseball game. For some bizare reason this game seemed to go on and on and on. There were minor delays, errors and arguments, and it was getting late. Our guys managed to pull the rabbit out of the hat and win the game, but the first couple of innings started off to be in the opposing team’s favour. Everyone was just finally glad it was over and we could all go home.

Born and raised in a small town in Ontario, Canada, with 5 sisters and a brother. Now retired, my husband and I travel, play golf and am slowly renovating our new (old) home. After my kidney transplant in 1999, we've learned to enjoy life to the fullest. Nat and I have driven across Canada, taken an Alaskan cruise and drove home via the Northern United States. We've also been to Mexico, the Caribbean, the East Coast of Canada and Cape Breton. We've done the "Snowbird" thing, having lived in Destin, Florida for a couple of months of the year. In 2007 we changed our travel plans in order to move into and renovate our new "old" home, but hope to someday get back on the road again. We also love returning to Scotland (Nat's origin of birth) to visit his family and tour the Highlands and surrounding Isles.

  1. It depends on what your trying to install Ubuntu on and which version of Ubuntu are you trying to install. I had merry hell trying to install 7.04 on an old laptop last year. I gave up and waited for 7.10 to be released, and it worked like a dream.
